The terms single layer, 1.5 layer, 2.5 layer and SSB describe different ways of arranging yarn systems inside a forming fabric. They are useful categories, but they are not a performance ranking. A fabric must match the former, paper grade, furnish, speed, drainage plan and the mill's main quality or life concern.
At-a-Glance Comparison
| Structure | Typical design emphasis | Main points to verify |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Single layer | Simple construction and open drainage | Support, dimensional stability and wear reserve |
| 1.5 layer | Improved support and stability over basic single layer | Drainage balance, marking risk and seam quality |
| 2.5 layer | Added machine-side yarns and wear volume | Caliper, drive load, cleaning and position fit |
| SSB triple layer | Separate sheet and machine surfaces connected by binder yarns | Binder design, stability, drainage response and startup settings |
The exact yarn diameters, mesh, count, weave and heat setting matter as much as the category name. Two suppliers' “2.5-layer” products may not behave identically.
A single-layer fabric uses one basic weave system. Its relatively direct structure can provide open drainage and straightforward cleaning. It may suit slower machines, less demanding grades or positions where simplicity and economy are priorities.
Its limitations can appear when a machine requires fine sheet support, high dimensional stability and substantial machine-side wear volume at the same time. Ask the supplier to explain support-point distribution, yarn diameter and expected wear behavior rather than selecting on price alone.
A 1.5-layer forming fabric modifies the weave to increase support and stability without creating fully separate surfaces. It is widely considered where mills want a practical balance of formation, drainage, cleaning and operating cost.
Review the sheet-side topography, permeability test method, caliper and seam. If replacing a single-layer fabric, compare white-water solids and formation during the trial instead of judging only vacuum or drive load.
A 2.5-layer forming fabric adds machine-side yarn content to a double-layer-based construction. This can increase wear capacity and stability while the sheet side is designed for fiber support.
The added structure is not automatically beneficial in every position. Verify roll geometry, cleaning, fabric caliper, water handling and how drainage is distributed across forming elements. A specification that drains adequately but stores contamination can lose its advantage over time.
An SSB triple-layer forming fabric uses dedicated sheet-side and machine-side systems joined by binder yarns. This gives designers more freedom to combine fine support on top with stability and wear volume below.
SSB is often evaluated for faster machines and demanding grades, but the binder concept, seam construction and position conditions must be understood. The correct trial includes a startup and cleaning plan, not only a purchase specification.
Choose by the Problem to Solve
Start with the mill objective:
- for formation or pinholes, review sheet-side support, early drainage and retention;
- for short life, map machine-side wear and check rolls, showers and tension;
- for high drive load, inspect contamination, alignment and water carrying;
- for instability, review guides, stretch, seam and fabric design;
- for low dryness, evaluate the entire drainage profile rather than selecting maximum permeability.
Our guide to drainage versus retention explains why CFM alone cannot make this decision. The forming-fabric category provides the product families available for position-specific review.
Send the former type, exact position, machine speed, finished width and length, paper grade and basis-weight range, furnish and filler, current fabric construction and permeability, vacuum configuration, cleaning equipment, service life and the main defect. Used-fabric photos are especially useful when wear or contamination is the concern.
Do not request “the strongest SSB” without this context. A technically useful quotation should state the proposed structure, permeability units and test method, seam, dimensions and the reason the construction suits the position.
Conclusion
Layer count is a design language, not a guarantee. The best forming fabric is the lowest-risk match between sheet support, controlled drainage, stability, cleaning and wear for one machine position. Contact HengXing with your operating data for a side-by-side specification review.
